Digital Technology and Filmmaking Since the first movies were first made, they have been shot using film of various sizes, such as 8mm, 16mm, and 35mm. Within the past few years, technology has brought digital cameras to the film industry, and now they are being used in independent and Hollywood films. The recent low budget film The Blair Witch Project was primarily filmed using a Sony VX1000 digital camera, and the movie The Celebration was totally filmed using this camera and the Canon XL-1, (Should I Shoot 16mm or Digital?). With some of digitals seemingly wonderful qualities, such as its low cost, it may seem to some like a profound revolution that will sweep the film industry. These cameras cost around $4,000. But you donââ¬â¢t have to buy them; there are places where you can rent them. It says that because of the success of certain films shot digitally, such as The Celebration, the Sundance Film Festival anticipated a large number of digital entries this past season, which took place from January 20 till the 30 (12). They provided top of the line digital projectors at several of their locations. They arenââ¬â¢t the only group of people who are enthusiastic about digitals possibilities though. In Electronic Engineering Times, December 13 issue, an article called To Infinity and Beyond: Digital Cinemaââ¬â¢s Promise written by Richard Doherty, tells about the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers annual meeting (85). Digital seemed to be the thing at the meeting that year, as everyone agreed that digital was going to go far, as it would be nearly limitless in the film industry.
